About

Vertical Hold offers both rock climbing and yoga in a distinctive old-school climbing gym environment. The facility features textured walls that provide more realistic cracks and smearing opportunities compared to modern plywood walls, along with a great variety of climbing grades suitable for all skill levels. Members appreciate the auto-belays that allow solo climbers to practice rope climbing without a partner, and the well-planned separate bouldering section. The gym maintains a training area with standard weights, exercise machines, hangboards, and a MoonBoard for dedicated climbers looking to improve their skills.

They appreciate the fun and diverse route setting that ranges from beginner to advanced levels, along with the well-planned bouldering section and auto-belays for solo climbers. Reviewers enjoy the welcoming atmosphere, curated music, and the fact the gym doesn't get too crowded during evening hours. This place is good. Really good! The staff are super friendly and helpful. Always attentive behind the desk and very helpful in case of getting equipment, enquiries and first aid. The routes are great. Ranging from beginner to advanced. It doesn't get too crowded. I usually go in the evenings after work. There is a separate section for bouldering and it's planned out very well. I really enjoy the atmosphere of the place and the people who come to climb. And props to the person curating the music every time - never misses

Great options for all climbers! A workout area as well + evening yoga. I sat at a table upstairs, used the WiFi and worked while climbing.

I visited this gym once while I was in San Diego on business. I'm reviewing it as a training facility for rock climbing. The good: 1. The staff were friendly and helpful. 2. This is an old-school climbing gym, and I like that. They have textured walls rather than the Walltopia plywood walls seen in many modern gyms. This allows for more realistic cracks and smearing. 3. The training area seems adequate. I did not use it during my single visit, but they have standard weights, exercise machines, hangboards, and a MoonBoard. 4. They have a few auto-belays, so if you are alone, like I was, you can climb ropes without a partner. 5. A great variety of grades—even on the auto-belays. The not-so-good: 1. This is an older gym, and everything has been well used. The place seemed dirtier than most (but not all) climbing gyms I’ve visited. The lighting was also a little dim.

This was the first place I ever climbed, back when it was “Solid Rock” many many years ago, and it was the start of a 10+ year love for climbing. Is it the best gym in San Diego? No, probably not. But it’s a great place with fun setting and a good diversity of routes.
