This was a sweet museum. With two bars! I’ve been to many museums of natural history around the world, and, although this wasn’t the most impressive, it was clean and well organized and had the usual suspects in place. But what made this place enchanting was that they have a couple of bars, Including a rooftop bar! Many of these museums really cater to children, so it’s nice to have a little space for an adult beverage. I also thought it was wonderful that they open their doors for the annual December nights. Several of the museums that were open for December nights had limited areas that you could visit, whereas the history museum was wide open. And they had the regular “stuffed animals“ which is what someone in Vienna once called the animals on display. He said we were going to a ‘stuffed animal museum’, and I thought he meant a museum featuring elements like the origins of Winnie the Pooh, but he meant a natural history museum. So, now, every time I see taxidermy animals, I think of them as stuffed animals. It was lovely that the “stuffed animals“ at this museum had a nice explanation of the items on display. And the museum discussed preservation and how they came into their collection. I was also completely enchanted by the giant metal beetle sculpture. See photo of me being charmed by this large beetle. If we had younger children, I imagine that we would be at this museum quite a bit. Alas, they are in their 20s now, but, this would’ve been one of their favorite museums if they were younger. Great collection. Beautifully curated. And again, love the bar element! And the drinks were creative as well. And tasty! And reasonably priced. What more could you want?

I visited the San Diego Natural History Museum with my family and friends and found it extremely interesting and educational. The exhibits are impressive, engaging, and thoughtfully presented. I was truly amazed—there are no words to fully describe the experience. I have visited museums in several countries, and in my opinion, this museum compares well with world-class museums such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi. We genuinely loved our time there, and it was a memorable experience for both adults and children. The only area that needs improvement is the outside walking and garden areas. Unfortunately, these spaces were very dirty, which was upsetting and affected the overall experience. Better cleaning and maintenance of the external areas would greatly enhance the visit. As a personal suggestion, charging a small external-area maintenance fee—such as a minimum of $5 per adult—could help support regular cleaning and upkeep. This is only my opinion, shared with good intentions. Overall, the museum itself is excellent and highly recommended.

Not a huge time commitment, and that’s a compliment! A quick visit that ends up lingering in your head. Fossils and ancient skulls are genuinely fascinating, and the museum has that quiet ‘deep time’ vibe. Not overwhelming, but definitely thought-provoking. A solid stop if you’re curious and short on time.

Tons to explore, multiple levels of exhibits that are well designed and maintained. Curiosities everywhere. Each of my kiddos found different areas that grabbed their attention. One loved the bugs/butterflys, another dug the animal dioramas and the oldest was super into the fossil basement. I am a history/plant nerd and spent an hour or two on the top level looking through the high res old botany books and San Diego Maps. The NAT is a must see if you are around the Zoo/Balboa Park!

CandleLight: The Lord of the Rings performance by the String Quartet was music to my ears. I felt like I was floating through each region of the movie. Very Soothing, relaxing and unforgettable. I especially enjoyed that it was hosted at the San Diego Natural History Museum venue. Highly recommend.
