reviewsWhat Members Say

Members praise NMCSD - Balboa Fitness Center as one of the best military gyms in San Diego, highlighting its excellent layout, cleanliness, and great staff. The coed electric dry sauna is a popular amenity, though it has a four-person limit. Concerns include consistently loud gym music that can be heard through noise-cancelling headphones and potential wait times due to a 35-person capacity limit. Some active-duty members express frustration over weekend closures and capacity restrictions, feeling these policies inconvenience those living on base.

Best military gym I've been to in the San Diego area. Sauna is coed and only 4 people at a time--it is an electric dry sauna, not hot rock like another review said. Things are laid out really well and even during the rush it's still manageable. You have to take the elevator or stairs down a floor from the main entrance of the building to get there.

This is one of the nicest military gyms I've seen.

Great staff and a very clean gym. Only request is that they turn down the gym music, as it regularly pings my Apple Watch as unsafe decibels and I can hear the gyms’ bad music through my noise cancelling headphones.

The gym is a decent size but stays pretty busy throughout the week unlike most other military gyms that seem to taper off as the week progresses. If you're patient then it can be fine, but if you're going for tempo, maybe not.

There are over 3000 active duty staff members at this command and hundreds of those live in the barracks. This gym is only allowing 35 people in at a time. There were 6 people in line to get in at 1630, and it closes at 1800 so I just left. The hours/people limit need to change. We already have to wear masks when doing anything but cardio and all of us have our vaccine. It’s time to move on. Active duty shouldn’t have to pay for gyms out in town when there is one on the base, especially if WE LIVE ON THE BASE. Also, how can this gym not be open on the weekends?!? For most of us, that’s our only days off from work. I know the place is run by civilians, but why don’t you accommodate to the active duty population who live and work at this command.
