reviewsWhat Members Say
Members report that while some staff provide excellent customer service, with specific praise for Shanti's handling of complex issues, the gym struggles with significant maintenance and cleanliness problems. Common complaints include broken equipment like the jacuzzi being out of service for extended periods, dirty restrooms with mold and poor ventilation, and constant overcrowding that creates lines for machines and scattered weights. Several reviews mention that equipment is often missing or not properly racked, and that management communication during renovations was poor. Despite these issues, members acknowledge the gym's extensive equipment selection and generally find the coaching staff to be nice and professional.

Amazing customer service!!! I was having an issue with my membership check in and Shanti helped me for so long on a busy evening to get it all sorted out. I am so thankful for her kindness and understanding, and was very impressed by her ability to handle so many issues at one time! (Genuinely like 4 people were asking her questions at once and she was handling all of them)

Very disappointed with this location. The hot water jacuzzi / spa pool has been NOT working for almost a month and nobody seems to care. This is my 4th time coming from far away hoping it will be fixed, and every time it’s still not working. Today I even saw a lot of other members looking for it too, so it’s not only me. I asked the receptionist for help and she was not professional at all. She just kept saying “I don’t know, I don’t know” and couldn’t give any answer or timeline. Zero customer service and no respect for members. If you advertise a jacuzzi/spa pool, it should be working or at least staff should communicate properly. Very frustrating experience. ✅ 24 Hour Fitness Balboa Center needs to fix this ASAP and train staff how to talk to customers

Update to 1 stars after many more visits: broken equipment, dirty restrooms with constant lines, equipment not put away by inconsiderate members, and people constantly camping on equipment on their phones. Why does the staff just stand at the front desk and not address these issues? This gym is trying to service more customers than it can hold and the result is a terrible experience. There should be a total freeze on new memberships. It’s a disorganized overcrowded mess. I’m surprised how nice this gym is given how busy it is - busiest gym I have ever seen - supposedly 100k+ unique users per week. Bathroom can get really gross. A lot of inconsiderate members who do not re-rack weights or just camp on gym equipment, which is a problem.

Crowded 24/7, always wreaks like BO, hot & musty all year round, filthy everywhere, lines for every machine you need, no weights from 5-30 lbs on the rack, bathrooms are horrifying, creeps & weirdos, parking lot stinks of urine everywhere, vans/abandoned cars in the parking lot. Yet, somehow this is the biggest and best equipped gym in SD. If they charged more it could be so much better. Spend $5 more a month and you can get a much better gym.

This gym is … not great. Equipment is always missing, or scattered everywhere. Seems to be everywhere you don’t want it to be and never where you need it. Good luck finding the dumbbells you want - you’ll probably find one and then have to go on a manhunt for the other. Multiple times the paper towels are out or the spray bottle is missing for cleaning equipment. The women’s locker room is truly a disaster. Half the toilets are broken or unclean, the showers have a decaying, moldy, sewer smell coming from the drains with hair stuck to the walls, and there must be something wrong with the ventilation system because more often than not it feels like a sauna in there with heat and humidity. I don’t know if it’s the pool or the showers causing it but it keeps me sweating the entire time I’m trying to get ready for work in the morning. The people that work there are very nice, I’ll say that. But it feels like management just doesn’t care to make the place nice to come to. Sure, they did a renovation and got new floors back in November, but they shut down the entire gym for almost the whole month WITH NO WARNING ASIDE FROM A SMALL TYPED SIGN ON THE DOOR. I tried going one morning and was met with a locked door and dark gym and was told to come back at the end of the month. And I wasn’t alone, there were 4 other people trying to get in the gym that morning too. When I returned the day they were supposed to open, nope, construction workers were still going in and out and they told me to come back at 8am. This is 24 hour fitness…if I show up at 6am on the day they said they were re-opening, I kinda figured they’d be open! Anyways, long story that’s null and void aside from fueling my displeasure for this gym. If I could cancel now and get the rest of my money back for the annual membership, I would.
